A little learning is a dangerous thing
Once upon a time there lived a man in a certain village. He had a great interest in learning English. He went to a teacher to learn English. The teacher started teaching him, but the man was stupid/ dull headed. The man could not understand (বুঝেতে পাড়া) the rules of grammar. After a long effort (প্রচেষ্টা) by the teacher, the man learned (শিখে ছিল) only three words. They were (ছিল) ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘very good’.
After saying these (এইগুলো) three words, he went to his own (নিজের) village. He thought (চিন্তা করেছিল)that he had learned (শিখেছিল) a lot of English. He began (আরম্ভ করেছিল) to use these three English words most of the time. He could not think that the words were not correct.
One night a robbery (ডাকাতি)/ burglary (চুরি) took place in this village. Then the police came to the village. The police asked the man if he knew about the robbery (ডাকাতি)/ burglary (চুরি). The man replied , “Yes.” The police told him to report about the robbery (ডাকাতি)/ burglary (চুরি) to the police.
Then the man said ‘no’. For this reason, the police suspect (সন্দেহ) him, they wanted to arrest him. They arrested (গ্রেফতার) him and told him to go to the police station with them. He just told them “very well”. Thus (এভাবে) the man fell in danger. He was sent to prison (জেলখানা) for his little knowledge (অল্প বিদ্যা).
Morality (নৈতিকতা): A little knowledge is a dangerous thing (অল্প বিদ্যা ভয়ংকর).
বাংলা অর্থ
এক সময় একটি গ্রামে এক লোক বাস করত। ইংরেজি শেখার প্রতি তার প্রবল আগ্রহ ছিল। সে ইংরেজি শেখার জন্য একজন শিক্ষকের কাছে গিয়েছিল। শিক্ষক তাকে পড়াতে শুরু করলেন, কিন্তু লোকটি ছিল বোকা/নিস্তেজ মাথা। লোকটি ব্যাকরণের নিয়ম বুঝতে পারেনি। শিক্ষকের দ্বারা দীর্ঘ প্রচেষ্টার পরে, লোকটি শিখেছিল মাত্র তিনটি শব্দ। তারা ছিল (১) ‘হ্যাঁ’, ‘না’ এবং ‘খুব ভালো’।
এই তিনটি কথা বলার পর সে তার নিজ গ্রামে চলে গেল। সে ভেবেছিলেন যে সে অনেক ইংরেজি শিখেছে।সে বেশিরভাগ সময় এই তিনটি ইংরেজি শব্দ ব্যবহার করতে শুরু করেছিল। কথাগুলো যে সঠিক নয় তা সে ভাবতে পারেননি।
এক রাতে এই গ্রামে ডাকাতি হয়েছিল। এরপর গ্রামে পুলিশ এসেছিল। পুলিশ লোকটিকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিল সে ডাকাতি/ চুরি সম্পর্কে জানত কিনা। লোকটি উত্তর দিল, “হ্যাঁ।” পুলিশ তাকে ডাকাতি/ চুরি সম্পর্কে পুলিশকে রিপোর্ট করতে বলেছিল।
তখন লোকটি বললো ‘না’। এ কারণে পুলিশ তাকে সন্দেহ করেছিল, তারা তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করতে চেয়েছিল। তারা তাকে গ্রেপ্তার করে এবং তাদের সঙ্গে থানায় যেতে বলেছিল। তিনি শুধু তাদের বলেছিলেন “খুব ভাল”। এভাবে লোকটি বিপদে পড়ে গেল। স্বল্প জ্ঞানের জন্য তাকে কারাগারে পাঠানো হয়েছিল।
নৈতিকতা: সামান্য জ্ঞান একটি বিপজ্জনক জিনিস/ অল্পবিদ্যা ভয়ঙ্কর জিনিস।
